Reinforcement Steel Tensile & Bend Test

Testing rebar samples for yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and bend to confirm grade (e.g. Grade 60).

    Reference standards: ASTM A370, ASTM A615 / A706

    Equipment

    • Universal testing machine (UTM)
    • Extensometer
    • Weighing scale
    • Bend mandrel

    Procedure

    1. Take samples (≥ 1 m long) from each diameter per heat or per 25–50 tons delivered, witnessed by the consultant.
    2. Weigh and measure length to check unit mass against nominal (D²/162 kg/m).
    3. Mark gauge length (200 mm) and grip the sample in the UTM.
    4. Load steadily; record yield load, ultimate load and final elongation.
    5. Bend a separate sample 180° around the specified mandrel and inspect for cracks.

    Acceptance criteria

    • Grade 60: yield ≥ 420 MPa, tensile ≥ 620 MPa.
    • Elongation ≥ 7–9% depending on bar size.
    • Unit mass within −6% of nominal; no cracks on the bent surface.

    Health & safety

    • Wear PPE: helmet, safety shoes, gloves and eye protection.
    • Stand clear — bars can whip at fracture.

    FAQs

What is the Reinforcement Steel Tensile & Bend Test used for?
