Concrete Cylinder Crushing (Compressive Strength) Test

Sampling, casting, curing and testing 150×300 mm concrete cylinders to confirm compressive strength.

Reference standards: ASTM C31, ASTM C39, ASTM C172

    Equipment

    • 150×300 mm steel moulds
    • 16 mm tamping rod
    • Curing tank 23 ± 2 °C
    • Compression testing machine (calibrated)
    • Capping compound or neoprene pads

    Procedure

    1. Take a composite sample from the middle of the truck discharge within 15 minutes.
    2. Fill moulds in 3 layers, rodding each layer 25 times; tap sides 10–15 times.
    3. Strike off, label (date, location, grade) and cover; keep undisturbed 16–48 hours.
    4. Demould and cure in water at 23 ± 2 °C until test age.
    5. Cap ends, measure diameter, and load at 0.25 ± 0.05 MPa/s until failure.
    6. Record maximum load, fracture type; strength = load ÷ area.

    Acceptance criteria

    • Typical frequency: one set per 100 m³ or per pour, minimum one per day per grade.
    • Average of 3 consecutive ≥ f'c and no result below f'c − 3.5 MPa (ACI 318).

    Health & safety

    • Wear PPE: helmet, safety shoes, gloves and eye protection.
    • Use the machine guard during loading.
