Test Method Statements
Modified Proctor Compaction Test
Lab test to determine maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of soil.
Reference standards: ASTM D1557
Equipment
- Proctor mould
- 4.54 kg rammer, 457 mm drop
- Sieves
- Oven
- Scale
Procedure
- Air-dry the sample and sieve as per method (A/B/C).
- Mix with water at about 4–5 different moisture contents.
- Compact each in 5 layers with 25 (or 56) blows per layer.
- Weigh the mould + soil and find moisture content.
- Plot dry density vs moisture; the peak gives MDD and OMC.
Acceptance criteria
- Smooth curve with at least two points on each side of the peak.
Health & safety
- Wear PPE: helmet, safety shoes, gloves and eye protection.
