Test Method Statements
Plate Load Test
Field test to estimate the bearing capacity and settlement of soil at foundation level.
Reference standards: ASTM D1194 / IS 1888
Equipment
- 300–750 mm steel plate
- Hydraulic jack & pressure gauge
- Reaction load (kentledge)
- Dial gauges (0.01 mm)
Procedure
- Excavate to foundation level; pit width at least 5 × plate width.
- Seat the plate on a thin sand layer and set the jack and dial gauges.
- Apply a seating load and zero the gauges.
- Apply load in equal increments (≈ 1/5 of expected capacity), holding until settlement stabilises.
- Continue to failure or 25 mm settlement; record load–settlement data and plot.
Acceptance criteria
- Allowable bearing pressure from the curve with factor of safety (typically 2.5–3) and settlement limits.
Health & safety
- Wear PPE: helmet, safety shoes, gloves and eye protection.
- Keep clear of the kentledge during loading.
