    Concrete Core Test

Drilling and testing cores to check in-place strength when cylinder results are low.

    Reference standards: ASTM C42, ACI 318 §26.12

    Equipment

    • Core drilling machine with diamond bit
    • Rebar scanner
    • Compression machine

    Procedure

    1. Scan and mark rebar; select locations approved by the structural engineer.
    2. Drill cores (diameter ≥ 3 × aggregate size, L/D ≈ 2).
    3. Condition cores as per ASTM C42 (sealed bags, 5 days).
    4. Trim, cap and test in compression; apply L/D correction factors.
    5. Repair holes with non-shrink grout.

    Acceptance criteria

    • Average of 3 cores ≥ 0.85 f'c and no single core < 0.75 f'c (ACI 318).

    Health & safety

    • Wear PPE: helmet, safety shoes, gloves and eye protection.
    • Use water cooling and keep hands clear of the bit.
